Demons: Superstition or Real

I want to address few basic thoughts on the reality of demons and demonic possessions without getting too complicated on the christian doctrine. My worldview is based on the fact that the Bible is the divine WORD of God and Jesus Christ is the Son of God, so I have taken an incident recorded in the Bible to understand this phenomenon.

Are demons superstition or real?

Bible says When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell on his knees in front of him.He shouted at the top of his voice, “What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? In God’s name don’t torture me!” For Jesus had said to him,“Come out of this man, you impure spirit!” Then Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” “My name is Legion,” he replied, “for we are many. Mark 5:6-9

Jesus Christ has a conversation with a real demon. Jesus was not superstitious, ignorant or illiterate, but rather God incarnate in flesh. If Jesus had a real conversation that confirms that demons are real. Based on the above evidence it is clear that there are demons and they are real and actively working in the world, though we don’t see them like we see human beings. They manifest themselves in different ways through human beings. DEMONS are REAL and not Superstition.

Can demon or demons possess a person?

Again the same verses are evidence that demon(s) do take possession of human beings. They may manifest like it is recorded in this passage or in subtle forms. Until Jesus met the man he looked like a madman who could not be controlled, but the encounter with Jesus revealed what his real problem was. Apostle Paul says that Satan disguises himself as the Angel of Light, so for the ordinary it is impossible to know that. Paul describes this better in Ephesians 6:12 “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” As Paul describes “not against flesh and blood” – this means that our fight against the evil that we encounter is not with some radical group or any single individual we encounter in our daily life but against something that we don’t see but exists in the spiritual realm. Instead of this we fight, complain, argue with people only because we lack this biblical worldview.

Jesus had complete authority over demons

That incident continues to say in verse 10 -“And he begged Jesus again and again not to send them out of the area“. You don’t beg for mercy for your life “again and again” unless that person has complete authority over you, no matter where or when. Demons are real and demons know that Jesus has complete authority over them whether we know or believe.

Apostles received this authority too!

Jesus says in Matthew 10:7, 8 “As you go, proclaim this message: ‘The kingdom of heaven has come near.’ Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give.” Jesus not only had authority, but also delegated the same authority to the apostles. Yes, Jesus says freely you have received it from me meaning not by your good works and freely use them in my name.

Most important question of all – Do I have authority to do the same as Jesus and Apostles?

Jesus is crystal clear about what he wants to say. These were His words referred often as the Great Commission [Mark 16:15 – 18] : He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well. You don’t have to be a special Pastor/Priest, but the Jesus says that whoever believes and is baptized is considered a believer and the signs that accompany a true believer are that he/she will be able to drive out demons. This is not something that happened only during Jesus and Apostles time, but continues to happen through people who believe in the name of Jesus Christ.

Go drive out demons in the MIGHTY NAME OF JESUS CHRIST!

Do Your little part today and everyday and trust in Him for the rest

Andrew 5 Loaves and 2 Fish

Do Your little part today and everyday and trust in Him for the rest

Then Jesus lifted up His eyes, and seeing a great multitude coming toward Him, He said to Philip, “Where shall we buy bread, that these may eat?” 6 But this He said to test him, for He Himself knew what He would do.Philip answered Him, “Two hundred denarii worth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may have a little.”One of His disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to Him, 9 “There is a lad here who has five barley loaves and two small fish, but what are they among so many?” John 6: 5-9

Jesus sees a large crowd and has compassion on the hungry who have been following him and wants to feed them. He goes around to his disciples and asks what do we do to feed them, one answers that this is not something that we can afford, but Andrew says here is what one of us have. Andrew had them given to Jesus but at the same time was not sure how that would help the situation. As we read through the rest of the chapter that though little was enough for Jesus to multiply and feed 5000 and more. Little you have as time, energy, money is enough for Jesus to multiply for thousands. We might wonder how that will make a difference for such a big need, but it is for Jesus. Andrew helped feed the 5000 and we see his name is recorded in the Bible as an example that all little things you do everyday for Kingdom of God is recorded in the Book of Life for eternity. Be willing to serve truthfully and lovingly with the little You have. God Bless you!

God would never ban conversion

In recent months and may be years the controversy on conversion is raging like firestorm across the social media, although I am not sure if this is really a firestorm only in the digital world or also in the more real India. Today as a result everything is being looked through this prism and has made people nervous to the extent that one feels and openly confesses “I am a stranger in my own country”. This was indeed shocking to me, not because someone said that, but because more and more people have joined this group. As the cliché goes “do not judge a book by its cover”, it is easy to get into an argument and abuse each other, but to understand this better we need to dig a bit more under the cover. And if you want to understand more read through this or as the stats show 60% don’t read the complete article, but they have the most opinions and tend to share theirs quickly.

Conversion Conspiracy

I don’t know of any conspiracy, but I can see only a theological point of view which is completely ignored or lack of insight into this side. Does Bible advocate conversion of the heart or not? Jesus’s last words were “Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” So the fundamental duty of every follower of Christ is to share the good news of Jesus birth, His forgiveness of all sins through the death on Cross and His resurrection from death. This good news is referred in the Christian circles as the Great Commission, that is meant not just for the first followers of Christ, but since then to everyone who follows Christ. Some follow this directly, some provide direct/indirect support to those who do and as always there will be many who never followed these last words. This is fundamental teaching of Christianity and this is the reason many missionaries have traveled to unreachable places like the once dark continent, middle east and Asia and this continues to happen. People have lost lives or had been imprisoned doing this, the most recent and famous ones being Pastor Saeed imprisoned in Iran, Mr. Kenneth Bae in North Korea and many others who we may never know. I do not discount any conspiracy but there are less chances as this is stated more plainly.

It used to be all about truth and justice. Now, mostly I fight for market share.

Marketing the TRUTH

Today the home minister has asked why can’t everyone get along without doing any conversions and to me this is like saying lets not market cars or bikes. If all cars and bikes are same then why do we market them? I know this analogy is not perfect, but conveys the message if you think about this yourself a little more. Consumers in the process takes a test drive, scrutinize the claims, request feedback from their friends/experts and this way the consumer can choose what is perfect for them. If this is what is done for a vehicle that you use and throw, how much more should you be for your soul that is going to spend eternity. Think about that! So yes, TRUTH has to be marketed and Freedom of Choice is important to let the individual person be responsible for the actions. You cannot say you have freedom to choose your school, college course, your job, your spouse, your child, but not be allowed to choose your eternity.

Ban Conversion

One of the ideas being considered is to either ban conversion completely or introduce some form of law [like Sharia] which will make it difficult and dangerous to express and choose religion. This is being pictured as a way to save the gullible, poor people who otherwise cannot protect their faith, really? Just because they are poor or illiterate or downtrodden doesn’t mean that God forgot to install a brain and a heart. God is not good of the wise, rich and the intellectual. God, if is God would be someone who can connect with everyone directly because God is the creator of everyone irrespective of your physical, social or economic situation. God does not need zombies, but rather people who understand and choose to follow. God would never ban conversion. Banning freedom to profess or choose one’s personal spirituality is only counter productive. Making it more difficult, I believe would not stop people from choosing other religions but would only make it grow as it does right now [if not faster], the activities will become more underground and thus making it difficult to find out the real numbers. China is a classic example where state restrictions don’t work. Based on lot of statistics from reliable sources China an officially atheist country is expected to become the largest Christian country in the world by 2030. China which is able to grow tremendously economically, militarily and restrict their population growth so effectively through their ruthless policy yet could not stop growth of spirituality!

Christian growth vs population

Future state

I believe state and religion should never mix, if it does it would be making the same mistake that Christendom did in the middle centuries, Islam is doing right now in middle east/Africa/East Asia and Communists are doing in China. Let us learn our lessons that not all religions are the same and not all roads will lead to Rome. It is the society’s responsibility to guide and it is the individual’s responsibility to choose. If we have not learnt our lessons from history or current events and if we still continue to walk down this path like blind people as the saying goes “if the blind lead the blind both will fall into the pit“.

Social Media Express

Internet has always been a source of information, propaganda, and campaigns, it has also been the source of counter or false of the same, but social media has definitely enabled the reach of this information to your digital doorstep just like a newspaper did. Social media has transformed what you read and share and some say it has become a tool for peaceful activism and some believe it to be the debating platform for the betterment of a society. I am not convinced and here are my why’s.

Front Page News [FPN] factor

In general print media news, the front page is edited by a group of experienced editors who review the accuracy, relevance, language and content of the most important page of the news paper which is the front page, but think about the front page news that you get on your social media. How do you get your news in social media and who decides your front page? Since there are scores of news websites an average person most often depends on “reliable sources” whom the person assumes has already verified the editorial content. The usual reliable sources could be your boy friend, girl friend, favorite star in entertainment or politics or a member of a community. Your FPN could have been ripped out of context, because someone liked it or was moved by it or thought this was their service to society. Unfortunately this is your front page news!

Information Pelting

Yes, I call this information pelting because it sounds to me like rock pelting. Ever wondered why people throw rocks in demonstrations, because to an average person that’s all one can get to and prove participation. Same here the person who throws information thinks that this is a peaceful demonstration and nobody gets hurt. That is so untrue! The rate at which information is being pelted across, you can be sure someone has already been hurt though not physically. I have received comments that this is a way to create awareness and have a constructive debate, really? Most often people are more involved in creating awareness about their own greatness and others weakness and never vice versa, isn’t that odd? Which part of this looks constructive? Did you ever find out what constructive thing happened by your pelting? Through every cycle I see more viciousness in the language and actions of people and new seeds for another vicious cycle have been sown already and it every time drains the good from peoples heart. Analysis reveals that most people read 60% or less of a news article and these people tend to share the more, that’s a fact based on measurements. People who read less than 60% of an article are more likely to share them often in social media compared to the person who reads the complete article. I guess the 60% concluded the end and pelted the information anyway.

Only 60% actually read through the article completely based on research
Only 60% actually read through the article completely based on research
Lets Pelt!
Lets Pelt!

Social Media Judiciary

Usual judicial process takes months and years sometimes after listening to all sides, but social media delivers verdict at an amazing speed. Of course it’s not because there are some very well qualified justices who did not get any job so decided to participate in social media to deliver verdicts. Most users somehow have no difficulty in instantly assuming the role of an expert  religious scholar well versed in all holy texts or the role of supreme court justice well versed and experienced in the law of the land or the role of a moral compass. And some even are so exciting that they adorn all of these roles at the same time with so much of ease.  These days if you do not toe someone’s line or even decide to share a different perspective, you could be called out to the extent of being un-patriotic and I was called one myself. Social media is called a debating platform and how could you start a debate by saying “you barbarians on the other side of the debate”. Sorry the verdict is out even before you started reading the news!

The root of the problem is each one is drawing the moral line and races on ahead in the moral high horse completely convinced that theirs is the only right view. A little less narcism and more empathy would help social media express.

Hello world!

I always loved reading and watching news, but as days go by I see that the intensity of news and discussion both online and offline has changed tremendously. I am seeing the misuse of “freedom” and “free speech” as a result I have decided to share my views through this forum with respect and responsibility. Hope you enjoy as I learn and grow!
